Honoring Rev. Jesse Jackson: Our Vote, Our Voice, Our Promise

The OneV team joins millions across the country in honoring the legacy of Jesse Jackson, a tireless champion for justice, dignity, and the fundamental right to vote.

For more than five decades, Rev. Jackson stood at the intersection of civil rights and political power, reminding America that democracy works only when everyone can participate. From his early work with Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to founding Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Jackson made voter registration and civic participation central pillars of his life’s work.

He understood something that remains true today. The right to vote is the gateway right. Without it, communities lack the power to shape policy, hold leaders accountable, and demand equity. With it, ordinary people can transform systems.

In the 1980s, Rev. Jackson’s presidential campaigns were about far more than one candidate seeking office. They were massive civic mobilization efforts. His campaigns helped register hundreds of thousands of new voters especially Black, Latino, low‑income, and young Americans. They helped expand the electorate and demonstrated that broad, multiracial coalitions could influence national politics.

Jackson often said, “Our vote is our voice.” He did not stop at rhetoric. He organized voter registration drives. He challenged voter suppression efforts in multiple states. He pushed for expanded access to the ballot and greater representation in the political process. He understood that democracy must be defended not only in moments of crisis but in ongoing civic engagement.

His advocacy built upon the foundation laid by the Voting Rights Act of 1965, landmark legislation that outlawed discriminatory voting practices such as literacy tests, poll taxes in jurisdictions where they were still used, and other barriers that had prevented millions of Americans from voting. Yet Jackson also recognized that laws alone are not enough. Legal protections can be weakened, barriers can reappear in new forms, and participation can decline when people lose faith in the system.

That is why his legacy calls us to vigilance.

Today, as debates continue across the country about access to the ballot, voter identification requirements, rules for mail voting, early voting, and how legislative districts are drawn, Rev. Jackson’s life offers both a warning and an inspiration. The warning is that progress is never permanent. Protections can be rolled back. The inspiration is that organized people can expand and defend democracy.

At OneV, we carry that lesson forward. Our mission is to engage Americans across political affiliations, protect access to the ballot, and strengthen participation in every community. We believe, as Rev. Jackson did, that voting rights are not partisan. They are foundational to our democracy.

Honoring his legacy means more than remembering history. It means registering new voters. It means educating communities about their rights. It means speaking up when access is threatened. It means building relationships across differences so that more Americans see themselves as stakeholders in our shared democracy.

Rev. Jesse Jackson showed us that democracy expands when courage is paired with organization. As we reflect on his extraordinary life, we recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of protecting and strengthening the right to vote for everyone.

When every voice is heard, the nation moves closer to its promise.

And that promise is worth fighting for.
