The recent special elections in Wisconsin and Florida remind us of one fundamental truth: elections are decided by voters, not donors, pundits, or outside influencers. Each of these contests had unique dynamics, but the results underscore the power of voter turnout in shaping the future of American democracy.
Wisconsin Supreme Court: Big Money vs. Ballot Power
The battle for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court was expected to be razor-thin, with liberal candidate Susan Crawford facing off against conservative Brad Schimel. The race drew national attention, especially after billionaire Elon Musk poured significant funds into Schimel’s campaign.
Despite the heavy financial backing of Schimel, voters chose Susan Crawford, ensuring a liberal majority on the court.
• Susan Crawford (Liberal): 1,286,748 votes (55.05%)
• Brad Schimel (Conservative): 1,050,816 votes (44.95%)
• Margin of Victory: 9 percentage points
Crawford’s victory was a stark rebuttal to the influence of big-money donors. Even with Musk’s financial boost, voters ultimately made their own decision. High voter turnout was expected—Wisconsin has a history of close, high-stakes judicial elections. The intense campaigning from both sides also wasn’t surprising. The results show that voters remain deeply engaged in state judicial races. With major issues like redistricting and voting rights at stake, this victory signals that future Wisconsin elections could continue to be highly contested and closely watched.
Florida’s Congressional Face-Offs: Red Strongholds Tested
Florida’s 1st and 6th Congressional Districts were expected to remain Republican strongholds. With Trump-backed candidates in the mix, most analysts assumed the GOP would hold onto these seats with relative ease. Republican Jimmy Patronis (FL-1) and Randy Fine (FL-6) both won, but their victories were tighter than previous cycles.
Florida’s 1st Congressional District:
• Jimmy Patronis (Republican): 97,335 votes (56.91%)
• Gay Valimont (Democrat): 72,304 votes (42.28%)
• Margin of Victory: 14.63 percentage points
Florida’s 6th Congressional District:
• Randy Fine (Republican): 110,764 votes (56.66%)
• Josh Weil (Democrat): 83,485 votes (42.71%)
• Margin of Victory: 13.95 percentage points
While the GOP kept both seats, the narrowed margins of victory caught many off guard. In districts where Republicans have traditionally cruised to double-digit wins, this shift could signal potential cracks in Florida’s deep-red foundation. (In the 2024 presidential election, the Republican candidate won the 1st and 6th Congressional Districts by 37% and 30%, respectively). Given Florida’s political landscape, Republican victories weren’t shocking. Trump’s influence in these districts also played a key role, as expected. Even in solidly Republican areas, Democrats showed signs of gaining ground. If this trend continues, expect more competitive races in Florida and beyond as both parties reassess their strategies.
The Bigger Picture: How These Races Impact Congress
With these wins, the Republican House majority grows to 220-213, giving the GOP slightly more breathing room in an already razor-thin margin. While this won’t drastically change legislative battles, it reinforces the importance of every single House seat as we head into 2026. If Democrats continue to close gaps in historically Republican districts, the GOP may face tougher re-election battles next cycle. Meanwhile, Republicans will aim to secure their majority by keeping key seats and flipping battleground districts. Beyond these special elections, several important state and federal races are on the horizon:
Virginia’s Governor Showdown
• Candidates: Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) vs. U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D)
New Jersey’s Governor’s Race
• Candidates: Not yet finalized, but the race will be a test of the state’s political leanings
Special Congressional Elections (Texas, Arizona, and More)
• Why They Matter: Each race could help determine the balance of power in the House heading into 2026
These elections will shape policy on healthcare, economic policies, education, and voting rights, making voter engagement more crucial than ever.
