After the 2024 Election
Dear OneV Supporters,
Happy Election Day!
This election season has revolved around one of the most unique, turbulent and close presidential races in U.S. history.
The Republican nominee, and former President, decisively won his third consecutive nomination after leaving office at a low point with the January 6 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol. This tragic event was followed by a poor showing for the party in the 2022 midterms and four criminal cases that included one conviction against him (a first for a former president). Throughout this cycle, the former President has faced two assassination attempts, refused to have a second debate with the Vice President and has disseminated misinformation including false claims about voter fraud and immigrants engaging in animal cruelty.
The Vice President, and Democratic nominee, entered the race after the sitting President and incumbent made the stunning decision to drop out and endorse her 106 days before Election Day. She secured the nomination a couple of days later without opposition. Outperforming her last presidential run (during the 2020 primaries her campaign ended before the Iowa caucuses), the Vice President has been tasked with fending off criticism about her policy position shifts since her last campaign and the Administration’s low approval on their handling of the economy and illegal immigration.
Congress also hangs in the balance, as voters nationwide cast ballots for all House members and 34 Senate seats.
The 2024 election cycle is most expensive in our nation’s history – $10.5 billion has been spent on campaign ads for positions across all levels of government, $1 billion more than we spent during the 2020 cycle. And the swing states continue to have extraordinary influence – almost $4 out of every $5 spent for the presidential election has gone to the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.
The 2024 election season gives us much to analyze and after living through the last three presidential elections, it’s tempting to view the upcoming results as a culmination or end of a journey. However, our quest to protect and perfect our democracy doesn’t end tonight. Electing effective and well-intentioned leaders, who share our values, is a critical process and the end of a successful campaign understandably brings pleasure and a deep sense of accomplishment.
But the work of representative government is not just the process of deciding who leads; it’s also about the ongoing efforts of ensuring our leaders stay committed to helping all citizens prosper. That’s why OneV was founded – to help American citizens constantly stay engaged to promote a well-functioning representative government.
So, after we finish counting the ballots and declare the winners, let’s get some rest. And then, let’s immediately get back to work.
With gratitude,
Allen Feliz
